And now, exactly a year later, I finally got NIGHTWATCH and DAYWATCH through my Netflix queue and saw them myself (and had to dig back through history to find your post about them). NIGHTWATCH I liked a lot; DAYWATCH, I f’ing *loved*. You could pretty much look at the row of my DVDs above the TV and point out something in DAYWATCH that was an overt nod, homage, or outright steal for each of them – FIGHT CLUB, THE MATRIX, BUCKAROO BANZAI… f’ing *1941* for fuck’s sake, with a giant ferris wheel rolling down the street! Ridiculous. Hollywood doesn’t really know how to do Over The Top anymore, but clearly the Russians are just getting started.

A buddy of mine at work tells me that DAY WATCH is absolutely littered with in-joke references to the first film done “for the fans”.

She spent most of the time correcting the subtitles and explaining how the movie (in russian) was completely different than what the subtitles were saying. Apparently several dialogue changes were made to explain things like the woman living with mother (which probably wouldn’t happen in the US when a woman is age 30)

I enjoyed the film a great deal, but I’m hip to weird shit like that. Plus: several totally hot Russian chicks.

I really liked the movie as well. I liked ‘Night Watch’ better, but it was a fun ride!
