If you had one day & only one day to re-live in your life, what would you do with it? Would you correct your greatest mistakes, go back and do the thing you always regretted not doing, spend time with a loved one? Keep in mind that whatever you’d do, the Faustian half of this bargain is that your soul is erased from the universe. If you take this opportunity to live one more day after your death, it’ll be like you never existed. So if you decided to take the opportunity, and who’s saying you would, I’m guessing that whatever you’d do, you would never decide to spend it playing with your toy robot.

David makes that decision for his mother, and he does it out of pure love. At the end of the movie the Pinocchio allegory is complete and he’s a real boy, but only because he’s finally done something irredeemable and completely unforgivable with the purest of intentions. That’s what finally makes him human. He’s brutally sacrificed the person he loves more than anyone in the entire world and he’s too lovestruck to notice, totally content and happy with his actions.

That’s what I call a pretty kick-ass ending right there.
