It was only later when I read up on things like the Bell X-1 that I became aware of just how important a dude he was.

In terms of other seriously amazing air aces, I’d nominate Hans-Joachim Marseille, the “Star of Africa”. Check it out:

“On Sept. 1, 1942, a month before his death, he shot down 17 enemies in one day, including 8 victories in 10 minutes, in his 2nd sortie that day. During this month he shot down 54 enemy aircraft.”

From the First World War, I think Oswald Boelcke gets the nod, not through any great individual feats (von Richthofen) or ability (Immelmann), but because he was the greatest air tactician of the age, and the pioneer of formation combat flying and codified air combat (the Dicta Boelcke).

I also know the Yeager. I went to space camp in huntsville I was so into astronaut history as a kid. (being -60 miles from the kennedy space center growing up didn’t hurt) and man have you filled out my limited knowledge base on his awesome!
Thanks for reminding me that the right stuff exists and I need to rewatch it.
