Good post and I agree with you about the cost of the disposable razors! Even those promising not to cause skin irritation does, not to mention the chicken skin left out after shaving! I gave up using shaving cream a long time ago. I don't know why some people still love to use those anyway.

I switched to "Safety Razors" a while back which is a step between modern disposables and a straight razor. I love the shave an actual blade gives and the meditative nature of taking the time to set up your area, work a good lather with a brush and the care and thought that goes into the act in order to not remove your face. It's a rare thing in my world to totally focus on a task.

If you can take excellent care of a blade edge, just go for an old-fashioned permanent tool steel blade. You can get them much sharper than a stainless disposable blade, and they will stay that way for months. You do have to keep them oiled and rust-free, and take extra care in sanitizing them before use... so they can be dangerous for slackers.
I have a permanent chinstrap, but I use a 3rd generation blade on my neck. I wouldn't use anything else. You can find them at just about any antique store, or your grandpa's attic.

I never really was able to find a local place that sold a straight razor. I do prefer it though, the few times I've used one.

Any recommended blade? I've wanted to switch for a while, but can't find straight razors locally. Is there a good company online?
